Who can join the Choir ?
This a mixed choir so men and women are welcome.
You do not need to be able to read music, as help is given.
Experienced singers or beginners willing to learn are eligible.
Do I have to be a Police Officer ?
No, The choir includes serving and retired officers and their family members, as well as support staff. Some members have no police connection at all, but enjoy singing for good causes.
But I have never sung before, can I join ?
Yes. Our Musical Director Norman and Deputy Director Doreen are very experienced at leading singers who have never sung before and/or cannot read music.
Do I have to be auditioned ?
There is no formal audition, but after a few weeks of attendance the Musical Director needs to hear your singing voice to make sure you are in the right section.
Are there any age restrictions ?
Age is unimportant. However, due to insurance retrictions under 16s cannot perform in public.
How long has the choir been going ?
The Choir started in 1989 and has performed over 300 concerts raising over £300,000 for local charities and good causes.
What kind of music does the choir sing ?
We have an extensive repertoire of songs, including operatic choruses, stage show favourites, modern light music, traditional songs and sacred music. The music is chosen by the Musical Director. Each concert includes a mixture of musical styles to give something for everyone to enjoy.
Are you connected with a church ?
No, the choir is non-sectarian. We welcome anyone who joins the choir. We do perform a number of our concerts in churches as the accoustics are better, and we are often asked by a church to help with its fund raising.
What would my commitment as a member be?
The choir rehearses every Tuesday evening at 7.30pm at the Assembly Hall,B Block, Essex Police Headquarters, Kingston Crescent, Springfield, Chelmsford, CM2 6DN. There are around ten concerts each year between March and December, mainly on Saturday evenings. All music and uniforms are provided by the choir.
How do I book the choir for a concert?
Choir bookings are arranged in the July of the preceding concert season year, so plenty of notice will be required. Please make your initial approach to the secretary by email: firstname.lastname@example.org or by post to Essex Police Choir secretary, Police Headquarters, Springfield, Chelmsford
How much does it cost to book?
The Essex Police Choir makes no charge for a concert, However, a contribution towards choir funds would be greatly appreciated, so this means that most of our concerts produce a healthy benefit to the organisers' chosen charities or good causes. The choir is self-financing by means of CD sales and members' contributions. No cost falls to the public.
